Face It: Are you getting enough beauty sleep? - KVOA Tucson News

Written by tucson, az - Google News.

TUCSON - Are you getting enough "beauty sleep"? It's not just an idle phrase - snoozing really does improve your physical appearance, and now there is research to back it up.

Our dermatology contributor, Dr. Tina Pai, stopped by the News 4 Tucson studios to talk about a study done in Sweden - information from Dr. Pai's discussion with Martha is below.

1) We often use the phrase "beauty sleep," but a study done at Stockholm University in Sweden gives scientific support to this notion. A group of healthy young adults were photographed after eight hours of sleep, and also after being awake for 31 hours.

Observers then looked at the photographs and rated their appearance.
Individuals were perceived as being less healthy and less attractive when they were sleep-deprived, compared to when they had a good night's sleep.

2) Get 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Sleep is thought to be important for wound healing and a healty immune system.
Inadequate or restless sleep doesn't provide the same benefits.

3) Sleep on your back. It's the best position for minimizing facial wrinkles.
For people who sleep on their side, night can be detrimental to their appearance because they develop sleep creases on the face which become quite deep over time.

However, it is next to impossible to change your favorite sleep position...So, there are special pillows designed for side-sleepers, to prevent sleep wrinkles, such as the "Save My Face" pillow.

It may also be helpful to use a silk pillowcase, because skin slides more easily over its surface.

5) Many people frown in their sleep, and they notice that their frown lines are more noticeable in the morning. This can be solved by Botox injections to relax the frown muscles. People with mild lines sometimes find it helpful to wear special skin patches on the face while sleeping.

6) Apply your antiperspirant at night. Interestingly, studies show that antiperspirant is much more effective when applied at night rather than in the morning
