Which minority educator does Daniel Patterson want to replace: the Yaqui or ... - Tucson Citizen
Current LD29 Democratic Representative Daniel Patterson is “in to win re-election” for the newly redistricted LD3 in Tucson.
I’m proud to say I am running for re-election in 2012 as your Representative for Tucson and Pima County’s new Legislative District 3 (downtown, UA, central, west/southwest side, Tucson Mountains & Avra Valley) map.
This raises an interesting question.
The new LD3 is mostly made up of the old LD27, currently represented by Sally Gonzales and Macario Saldate.
They are both former educators and have both been very active in fighting the Ethnic Studies ban in Tucson. They both came out publicly during a press conference to support the UNIDOS action on April 26th and Sally Gonzales was even present at that event when the courageous students stopped a TUSD board vote to dismantle their program.
Sally Gonzales is the author of a bill this legislative session to repeal the Ethnic Studies ban. She introduced such as bill last year also, but with Republican super-majorities in the House and Senate, the bill was not able to get the votes it needed. Now with Russell Pearce gone, perhaps the atmosphere of hatred against minorities may have changed this year. Maybe not.
Dr. Macario Saldate was the very first head of Mexican American Studies when it was first formed at the University of Arizona about 4 decades ago. He has also been an active supporter of the program to this day.
Which one of these two awesome representatives does Daniel Patterson think he is better than?
Which one does he want to beat, silencing their voice in the legislature so that he take over their spot instead?
Which one of these most vocal and strong supporters of Mexican American Studies does Daniel Patterson want to replace with himself?
