Pima Air art show features unique works - KVOA Tucson News

Written by tucson, az - Google News.

TUCSON - International artists painted full size planes for an art exhibit at the Pima Air and Space Museum.

"Pretty much any artist that would be approached to do such a massive project," San Francisco artist Andrew Shoultz said, "would probably jump at the opportunity."

Eric Firestone started the exhibit and called it the Boneyard Project.

Firestone spent about 20 years in the Tucson art community.

He has a gallery with his name on it in Long Island, New York.

"I'm a little borderline between genius and nuts," Firestone said, "It took this very inanimate type of cold industrial machine and gave it a personality."

It started when he gave airplane nose cones to artists to use as canvasses. Now artists are using full size planes.

Museum curators are excited about drawing a different crowd.

"It's a niche appeal type of museum," museum director Scott Marchand said, "and we're hoping to show people that we're more than just air and space technology."

The grand opening of the display will be Saturday night from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. The event will include live music and food and drinks for all ages.
